Where did 2011 go? It's the new year already and time to start thinking about those annual trips to the vet. It's important to keep those appointments even if your pet shows no signs of sickness. A yearly checkup can help you avoid costly vet bills later.

Dogs May Pick Up on Human Intent

Dogs, Babies Have Similar Reactions to People's Communication Signals, Study Suggests

Jan. 5, 2012 -- A new study may confirm what many dog owners already know.
Dogs not only get the meaning of some words like "treat" and "go outside." They can also follow a person's eye movements and pick up on nonverbal signals, a new study suggests.
"Dogs' receptivity to human communication is surprisingly similar to the receptivity of very young children," the researchers say in a news release.
They claim that our four-legged friends react similar to a 6 1/2-month-old infant when they're being spoken to or when given direct eye contact.
"Our findings reveal that dogs are receptive to human communications in a manner that was previously attributed only to human infants," says József Topál, PhD, a senior researcher on the comparative behavior research team at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest.
This makes dogs good at reading people's communication intent and responding to their nonverbal gestures, such as turning a head in the direction of an object.
The study is published online in the journal Current Biology.

Following Dogs' Eyes

For the study, the first to use eye-tracking software on man's best friend, 29 dogs were placed in front of video recordings.
One of the videos shows a woman standing at a table with two plastic flower pots placed on either side of her. At first, the woman holds her head down, then she raises it and looks directly at the dog and says, "Hi dog," in a high-pitched voice. This test revealed whether dogs were sensitive to the same cues as infants.
In a second video meant to test more complex communication signals understood by adults, the woman keeps her head down while talking to the dog and says, "Hi dog," in a low-pitched voice.
In both situations, after giving a verbal cue to the dog, the woman turns her head to look in the direction of one of the flower pots. Researchers measured whether or not the dogs looked to the same side as the woman and how long they stared at the woman who spoke to them.
They compared the dogs' reactions to a comparison situation in which the dogs received no eye contact from the woman and no "Hi dog" address from her.
The study shows that dogs looked at the screen longer when they had eye contact from the woman and were directly addressed -- as in the first example where the woman showed a stronger attempt to communicate -- and they also were more likely to follow her head movement..
The researchers suggest their results show striking similarities between the gaze-following behaviors of adult pet dogs and preverbal infants in response to human communication signals.
"By following the eye movements of dogs, we were able to get a firsthand look at how their minds are actually working," Topál says.

I think that's amazing. But I already knew dogs were smart. ;)~

Size Doesn’t Matter When It Comes to Pomeranian Training

I have 2 Pommies. One is perfect to train, because he cares what we think. The other doesn't give a hoot and he's impossible to train!

Here's some advice for us all:

The key to Pomeranian Training is to understand what makes this adorable breed unique. While a small breed of dog, Pomeranians have big personalities. Small and precocious, Pomeranians love their owners and can be possessive and have separations anxiety. These are two of many reasons that training your Pomeranian is so important.

The Basics

Pomeranians need a firm but loving hand during training. Lots of praise and some edible treats should be enough to get the ball rolling.
Pomeranians have a lot of energy so when training your dog; try to eliminate any possible distractions. Show your dog an edible treat before you begin and start verbalizing the first command. When your dog accomplishes the command successfully, praise the dog and give the dog the edible treat.
Don’t try to train your dog on more than one command at a time. Training your dog one command at a time will speed up the time it takes to train your Pomeranian rather than slow it down as it reduces confusion. Never scold your Pomeranian during training. By using only positive reinforcement, you will create a positive learning experience for your dog and a strong, trusting bond.

Barking

Barking can become an issue with Pom Poms and should be addressed with Pomeranian training while they are still puppies if possible. Poms will generally vocalize when presented with new stimuli such as new animals, people, or sounds. They will also often bark if they feel any threat to their owners, as they are very protective and strongly bonded with their families.

Crating

If you are crate training a Pomeranian, keep in mind that size really does matter when choosing a crate, kennel or travel container. Your Pomeranian must be able to stand up and turn around when housed in the crate, but should not be able to walk, jump, or play. If your Pom has extra space in their crate, they will be more likely to go potty in the crate because they have room enough to still lie down.

Environment

Because of their small size, Pomeranians can be great in apartments. They will be very active indoors and tend to love playing with their owners and toys. In warm weather, they will often seek out cooler places to lie down, such as a tile floor. Since Poms are companion dogs and they form such strong bonds to their owners, they should generally not be left outdoors on their own. They will likely suffer separation anxiety in such an environment, which can lead to behavioral problems including excessive barking.

Intelligence

Despite what many people believe, Pom Poms are quite intelligent. They often use that intelligence to manipulate the people in their lives into giving them exactly what they want. As super cute as they are, it’s important that you lay down the law with your Pom while they are still a puppy. Establish yourself as the Alpha Dog in your relationship with your pooch early on to avoid behavioral problems in the future.
Pomeranians are generally a sturdy breed and have few health problems. They have an average life expectancy of 12-16 years. While basic training may take just a few months, Pomeranian training can continue for its entire lifespan as old dogs can learn new tricks, and your Pom Pom is sure to enjoy any and all time they can spend with you.

Adult fleas spend most of their time on an animal, but the flea eggs, larvae, and pupae are found in abundance in the environment such as in carpeting, rugs, bedding, and grass. For every flea that you see on your pet, there are likely to be hundreds of eggs and larvae in your home and yard. Therefore, a truly effective flea control program always includes treating the environment as well as treating your pet. These are the essential steps for a successful flea control program:

Remove fleas from the indoor environment.
Remove fleas from the outdoor environment.
Remove fleas from pets.
Keep immature forms of fleas from developing.

The best flea control is always flea prevention. Adulticides (products that kill adult fleas) are a cornerstone of prevention. Pyrethrins and permethrins have flea repellent activity. (NOTE: Permethrins should NOT be used on cats.) Using products containing these insecticides will help keep fleas away and prevent a flea problem from developing. Regular use of insect growth regulators/development inhibitors may reduce the risk of fleas becoming established in the indoor and outdoor environment."

How To Make Green Beer

Simple Green Beer

Ingredients

Beer, preferably a Guinness or a Light Amber
Green Food Coloring

Instructions

To make green beer, the first step would be to take a clear glass or mug and chill it either in the freezer or in refrigerator. A warm glass does not serve the purpose of green beer, as it sucks out the flavor from the same.
Once the glass has been chilled, take out the beer. While a light color beer best suits the purpose, you can also go for darker beer to achieve the similar effect. Remember, even the darkest of beer can give the same result - a festive green color.
The next step would be to add the green coloring to the mug. A maximum of 2 to 3 drops would be sufficient to bring the color.
Once you have put in the color, pour the beer in the glass.
The festive green beer is ready to be served and enjoyed, to mark the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day.

Green Beer In Leprechaun Style

Ingredients

Pale Colored Beer
Clear Glass or Mug
A Spoon
Food Coloring

Instructions

To make green beer in leprechaun style, you first need to pour the beer in a clean glass. Hold the glass at an angle of 45 degrees and let the beer strike the middle of the glass and slant its way downwards. This would allow minimum foam formation.
When the entire beet has been poured, add the food coloring. Add a drop or two of and stir it gently with the help of a spoon.
Now, add another two drops and continue until you have added about six drops of the food coloring.
You are sure to be surprised at the result. The green beer would be brighter than olive and surely be a great accompaniment to rejoice on St. Patrick’s Day.

Tips

In case, you want to enhance the flavor and effect of the green beer, take a glass that has a large mouth.
At the time of freezing the glass, make sure that it is ice-cold. This would impart a dramatic effect to the green beer.
Though the flavor of the green beer is same as that of an uncolored, original beer, people still like to believe that green beer is different to taste. In case you really want to alter the flavor of green beer, just add a bit of lime. This would spark off the brightness of the beer and also change the flavor to some an extent.
Traditionally, light color beer is most preferred to create the green effect.
For those of you who are following the leprechaun style i.e. pouring the beer before adding the color, make sure you do not stir much, else you would beat out all of the carbonation, before the mixing is done.

Does Your Dog Have Separation Anxiety? Mine did!

Diagnosing Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety
Dogs with separation anxiety exhibit behavior problems when they’re left alone. Typically, they’ll have a dramatic anxiety response for 20-60 minutes after their owners leave them, if not all day!
The most common of these behaviors are: Digging, chewing and scratching at doors or windows in an attempt to escape and reunite with their owners. Howling, barking and crying in an attempt to get their owner to return. Urination and defecation (even with housetrained dogs) as a result of distress.

What To Do If Your Dog Has Separation Anxiety

For a minor separation anxiety problem, the following techniques may be helpful.
Keep arrivals and departures low-key. For example, when you arrive home, ignore your dog for the first few minutes, then calmly pet him after he has calmed down. Never give affection when he's in an excited state!
Leave your dog with an article of clothing that smells like you, an old tee shirt that you’ve slept in recently, for example. Let him sleep in the hamper if he wishes. This helped my dog.
Establish a “safety cue”—a word or action that you use every time you leave that tells your dog you’ll be back. Dogs usually learn to associate certain cues with short absences by their owners.
Some examples of safety cues are: a playing radio; a playing television; a bone; or a toy (one that doesn’t have dangerous fillings and can’t be torn into pieces) or even a highly prized treat that he only gets when you leave. Leaving a radio on to provide company for your dog isn’t particularly useful by itself, but a playing radio may work if you’ve used it consistently as a safety cue in your practice sessions.
If your dog engages in destructive chewing as part of his separation distress, offering him a puzzle may help. There are several dog sites that sell dog puzzles and treat balls that are very helpful in entertaining your pet.
PawLickers has a large selection of puzzles. I have purchased several and alternate them. They are awesome! My dog loves them, but he's a real go-getter! I'm sure a slower, lazy dog wouldn't bother to get the treats hidden inside - so go by what your pets personality is.
These are just some tips I picked up from my trainer and from a little searching on the web. Now our neurotic dog is much happier when we leave every day.

Hiya, This is my favorite dog item because Corkey Joe always makes me smile. He was very shy of the camera and as soon as he saw it coming out he ran and hid at the end of the driveway, only very slowly and cautiously creeping towards me along the edge of the 'morning glories'. He finally paused and looked at me to see if it was 'safe' and I managed to snap this shot.

My favorite of all my items is this one, I had so much fun drawing it as I love recreating textures, definitely one of my all time favorites, not just a Zazzle favorite.
